Wells Towel Ida Bell Wells Barnett (1862 1931) was born into slavery in Mississippi and gained her freedom following the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. At 16, after the death of her parents from yellow fever, she took on the responsibility of supporting her family. She later relocated to Memphis, where she worked as a teacher and journalist, focusing on racial segregation. Her investigations into lynchings led to the
